A unique decor idea

You know what I love about the Internet? You never know WHAT you'll run across. For instance, we're thinking of redoing some of the flooring in our home, but I don't think we'll go for this ...

It's the floor of a museum -- in India. Oh yeah -- in case you're wondering YES, those ARE sperm on the floor.

Sex museum makes HIV lessons fun
Fri Feb 9, 2007 3:32 PM ET
By Krittivas Mukherjee
MUMBAI, Feb 9 (Reuters Life!) - This is India's version of sex in the city.
A rare sex museum in Mumbai, the country's teeming financial capital, is drawing hundreds of prostitutes and their regular clients who say they learn more about HIV/AIDS from its graphic exhibits than staid lectures on safe sex.
Antarang, which means intimate in Hindi, is a one-room exhibition of nude statues, models of the human anatomy and illustrations near a well-known red light district in Mumbai. And it is India's only sex museum, according to its management.
Devoid of the glamour of sex museums of Amsterdam or New York, Antarang greets a visitor with a "lingam," a Hindu phallic-shaped symbol worshipped as one of the representations of Lord Shiva, Kama Sutra verses and wooden and plastic models showing the act of conception, child birth as well as descriptions of various sexual diseases.
"A sex museum is a better place to learn about sex and everything related to it," M.G. Vallecha, the chief of Antarang, entry to which is free, told Reuters.
The museum is run by the state government in an effort to combat HIV and AIDS in India. There are an estimated 5.7 million people infected with HIV, more than any other country, according to U.N. figures.
Experts say that number could quadruple by 2010 as many people are still reluctant to discuss safe sex openly.
Authorities all over India try various innovative ways, including street plays and "condom parties," to spread awareness about sexual diseases.
Mumbai is not only India's biggest and most cosmopolitan city, but it is also home to millions of migrants who leave their families in villages to search for jobs.
NO CONDOM, NO SEX
Antarang, whose floor tiles are painted to look like sperm, was opened in 2003. It became popular among prostitutes and some of their clients after health workers began taking them there.
"A major bulk of our thousands of visitors every year are sex workers and health volunteers," Vallecha said.
Some sex seekers also visit. In India, many prostitutes act as mistresses for one regular client who pays for her upkeep. They can often develop close relationships and sometimes visit the museum together, officials said.
"At first, sex workers coming to the museum are shy. But slowly they discover new things about something they thought they knew all about," said Manish Pawar, a health worker who has brought hundreds of prostitutes and their clients to the museum.
Many of the sex workers say the museum has changed their lives by teaching them about the need for safe sex.
"When they told us about AIDS and all we didn't understand much, but now after visiting the museum it is much clearer to us," said Jyoti, a middle-aged prostitute who gave only one name.
"Now we tell clients no condom -- no sex."
Authorities said they have few ordinary tourists.
"The area where the museum is located is stigmatized and even if they (tourists) want to come they don't because they don't want to be seen in a red light district," said Nirupa Borges, who helps run Antarang.
"We have some school and college students, but we would like more members of the mainstream society."
Authorities are planning to open another sex museum in a northern suburb, away from the red light district, to attract a wider audience.
"This museum is serving its purpose very well. We need more sex museums like this," Borges said.

Public Service Announcement

I've been inspired by Sock Girl's cheering up to do a public service announcement.

This is a WONDERFUL program called Cell Phones for Soldiers.

You can click on the link to find out more (MUCH MORE) about the program but in a nutshell .......

CPFS was founded by (then) tweens (now teens) Brittany and Robbie Bergquist in 2004. What they do is gather old cell phones, sell them, take the cash, and get prepaid calling cards for soldiers overseas. (They also take print cartridges). I believe that it averages about 100 minutes of calling time for each cell phone donated.

So -- if you happen to have an old cell phone sitting around and want to get rid of it -- you can check for drop off sites at this link.

Sometimes hearing a friendly voice can do a lot to make a person feel better.

And hey -- if you don't happen to have an old cell phone hanging around, call a friend today -- I'm sure you know someone that can use a friendly voice. (that number again -- 1-800-555-ramblin)

I'll never know

I ran across an add for a way to find out who my love soul mate is. I followed the link only to discover that I would need to have the information sent to my cell phone.

As I'd already gotten burned once on charges on messages sent to my cell phone, I decided to decline this once in a lifetime offer.

I guess I'll never find out who my love soul mate is.

Perhaps it's him (after all, I married him)

Or maybe him (hey a guy in chains and a loincloth??)

Or this fellow (hmmm I seem to like em all tied up).
Maybe this guy (he likes to keep my lap warm warm)

Or maybe this handsome fellow (he loves to jump on me and lick me behind the ear)

And here we have a two-fer -- a handsome prince (albeit a young handsome prince but hey it's Chip so I think he's a cutie) AND a frog (goodness knows -- I've kissed a lot of them.

Ah well -- I'll never know so I'll just love all my fellows

(cue Beatles music)

All you need is love,
All you need is love,
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need.

What's your theme song

I was reading Real Simple magazine and there was an article on your theme song. It's described as the song that makes you feel up and powerful and ready to take over the world. It really made a lot of sense - if you're going on a job interview or out to make a sale or whatever it would make you feel invincible.

SOME examples from the article

I'm the Greatest Star, Barbara Streisand, (from Funny Girl)

I Will Survive, Gloria Gaynor

My Sharona, The Knack

The Bitch is Back, Elton John

Too Many Fish in the Sea, Marvelettes

So I was just thinking about this (while reading this) and I came up with

Razzle Dazzle, London Cast Recording, (Long as you keep em way off balance how can they spot you got no talents)

On the one hand, I'm tempted to wonder twice about myself and my emotional security and such if I'm empowered by a song about faking it.

On the other hand there are

70
days left until April 16

So I'm just going to Razzle Dazzle for a couple of months, and THEN stop and think about life and philosophy and love and whatever.

slow and easy

I need to find a job like that -- someplace where I can do nothing, and keep a job for 3 years.

Mats the Malingering Sloth Fired for Dozing on the Job

Scientists at Jena University have given up trying to get a sloth to move. After three years of hard work, Mats' indolence has proved infectious and they've all decided the experiment is just too much effort.

"We even tried feeding him pasta and boiled eggs," despaired John Nyakatura from the Institute for Systematic Zoology and Evolutionary Biology in Jena. "Most sloths would have considered that a real treat and might have actually roused themselves to go for it."

But not Mats. Supposed to be taking part in an experiment in animal movement, he was the sort of deadbeat colleague nobody wants. For years, he refused to pull his weight.

"He was very uncooperative," said Nyakatura.

Unmoved

A sloth by name and nature, Mats couldn't be persuaded to stir, and consistently refused to climb up and down a pole.

"Sloths use their claws to hang from a branch and then move down it headfirst," said Nyakatura. "It's a very rare phenomenon in the animal world."

But perhaps not surprisingly, Mats proved to be a bit of a shirker. He obviously had more interesting things to do -- such as nothing.

"He wasn't remotely interested in furthering science,'' said Axel Burchardt, a university spokesman.

All too much hassle

Banished in disgrace to a zoo in Duisburg, he's no doubt hoping that everyone will just leave him alone.

But unfortunately for Mats, the zoo is apparently expecting him to reproduce. Judging by his performance so far, his keepers better prepare for a disappointment.

He needs to find the sloth equivalent of a Pointer Sister ....

I want a man with a slow hand .....

Someone forgot to mention

Looks like someone forgot to tell fuzzybutt that, at 85 pounds, he's a little big for a lapdog. Not to mention that a white and sable dog doesn't really "go" with black clothing.

bunch of wusses

I'm vaguely aware that there's this big honking football game tomorrow night. Curiosity got the best of me, and I was poking around and wondered where the future Super Bowl sites were ...

Super Bowl XLI, South Florida (Miami)

Super Bowl XLII, Glendale, Ariz.

Super Bowl XLIII, Tampa, Fla.

Super Bowl XLIV, South Florida (Miami)

There's lots of real nice football stadiums around the rest of the country.

Soldier Field is a really nice old stadium
(Tomorrow's predicted high for Chicago -- 4)

Then there's Green Bay
(Tomorrow's high for Green Bay -- 1 -- well it'll be above 0)

How about Minneapolis?? Home of the Vikings
(Tomorrow's high -- -2 -- that's the HIGH of two below 0)

By comparison Indy will be balmy with a predicted high of 12.

So why are they going to Miami???? Where it will be 68 at kickoff??

Bunch of wusses.
But I do hear there's a big storm system headed to Florida.

Rambling's best ever practical joke

A LONG time ago (in a galaxy far far away) I had a friend (I still have the friend, we just live cities apart and rarely communicate but he know if he ever shows up in this town and calls me we'll get some pizza and beer and he and/or his wife have a place to sleep if they want all the kids and noise and such).

Anyway my friend is now a meteorologist (back in the day, he was an aspiring meteorologist). His favorite movie of all time? ..... if you guessed

you'd be right on.

Anyway if you don't know the movie the basic premise is that Bill Murray's character is a meteorologist and goes to Punxsutawney for the festivities. He's then stuck doing the same day over and over and over and over and over.

Each day starts with the radio playing (as the alarm goes off at 6am) "I've Got You Babe"

So - my friend LOVES that movie, so one yaer on Feb. 2 I called him and played the clip from the movie with I've Got You Babe into his phone. And then I hung up. Repeated this for a few days.

He never did figure out who it was -- he had a guess that it was ANOTHER friend of ours (and I'm like "HEY you idiot -- the first call came at 9:00 EST -- which would make it 6:00am PST - and no matter how good the gag is she aiN'T gonna be out of bed at 6am"). (Okay -- honestly I think I was like second runner up -- I mean he knows a lot of really strange people but it does take someone a bit "over the top" to pull that year after year after year).

Next year did the same thing again. There was one year that for whatever reason I was unable to make the calls at the prescribed time, so I drafted some friends to help me.

This went one for something like 8-10 years before I got totally burned out on it (I think he might have burned out a year or two before me.)

HEY -- WM -- if you read this -- I got you babe or at least I'd LIKE to if I ever get the chance.

NOTE: Word on the street is (okay an article in the Chicago Tribune), like Phil, Cloudy did not see her shadow. (I think she would have seen her shadow -- if she had come out of her den - but she was smart enough to stay inside.

I'd like to see the end of this winter.

I'd like to see the end of this MONTH

Some Chicagoans plans for this weekend

Question (see answer below) What's the difference between Cheerios and the Indianapolis Colts????

Some people from my hometown have some plans for the weekend. They hope it looks something like this ...

Personally I don't care. I understand that the host family will have the SCRAPBOOKING room open so I know where I'll be while the big game is on.

Now, to answer my earlier question -- what's the difference between Cheerios and the Indy Colts??

Cheerios belong in a bowl.

(If you don't get it -- call me and I can get you an invitation to the scrapping room for Sunday)

HAPPY CANDLEMAS

It's February 2. The midway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. One way or another it means winter is 1/2 over.

February 2 is also more commonly know as .................

MOST of the year, people that get their weather forecast from the TV believe that "pretty people" are spot on meteorologists and believe whatever the "pretty people" tell them about the weather. (Think about it -- in the past 10 years have you seen an unattractive meteorologist? We don't care what a meteorologist knows actually -- can they point at the map and are they easy on the eyes).

Once a year people realize that "pretty people" really don't know all that much about meteorology and everyone turns to the famous Pennsylvanian Prognosticator ...

'cause he's ever so much more knowledgeable.

Phil Says Spring is Right Around the Corner!
Phil's official forecast as
read 2/2/07 at 7:28 a.m. at Gobbler's Knob:

El Nino has caused high winds, heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures in the west.
Here in the East with much mild winter weather we have been blessed.

Global warming has caused a great debate.
This mild winter makes it seem just great.

On this Groundhog Day we think of one thing.
Will we have winter or will we have spring?

On Gobbler's Knob I see no shadow today.
I predict that early spring is on the way.

Me -- I think spring will come sometime around March 21.

Stay tuned later today for .......

The prediction from Cloudy Groundhog on the spring forecast from the Children's Zoo at Brookfield Zoo near Chicago.

AND as a special Groundhog Day treat for you, my best ever practical joke.

just a short message

This kind of goes with the Vesuvius post ...

If I were to drive over a cliff today (hard to do in Illinois I know) and if someone were to get hold of my cell phone, it'd be hard for Spouse to get any insurance claims put through.

Two text messages - both sent to Crem

If you love me you will offer endless tea and sympathy and hugs and chocolate. If you love yourself you will stay VERY far away cause Vesuvius is bout to blow

Later, that same day

This day just keeps getting better.

I'd tell myself "cheer up, things can't get any worse."

But I've told myself that before, and discovered that I do, in fact, lie.

just beneath the surface

Isn't this a pretty picture. It's a pretty picture of a pretty "mountain" in pretty Italy and this picture has been taken from a convent (which we'll assume is a relatively peaceful serene place.

Same mountain, some 1900 years earlier.

Sometimes beneath the surface lies fire and fury. And you never know when an eruption will occur.

I wouldn't want to be the person that crosses me today. I'm just sayin.

What office supply am I???

I have no idea what this means -- but I took the quiz.

I am:
heavyweight (44 lb) cream white laser printable paper stock, for covers on lengthy documents
Having the title page hanging right out in the open, when it's more than five pages, just doesn't show the right degree of class.

Hometown kid

Hometown kid makes good. Evan Lysacek is the US Men's National Figure Skating Champion

Two things I can't get my mind around ....

I've watched Men's figure skating (athletic bodies -- form fitting clothing -- where's the downside??). I've seen some very good skaters but I can not wrap my brain around the entire quad/triple combo. Seven revolutions in the time it takes me to blink??? WOW!!!

In order to find a picture of Lysacek I had to dig around. Because on the hometown paper website you'd think you might find it. NOPE??? What about the Chicago papers?? Trib?? Sun Times? NOPE!!

Why not -- because forgoshsake. LAST weeks the Bears won a football game and NEXT week they're going to play another so heaven forbid they take out any of the photo space they have in the papers to report any OTHER sporting events.

ifn you don't mind ...

My friend is trying to get 1000 hits on her tv related blog this month.

Talkin-bout-tv.blogspot

If you want, you can even tell her that ramblingmom sent you.

Hmmm someday I'll post about TV -- but for now just hop over and look at Trina's site.

My parenting advice (worth what you paid for it)

My friend LSM, over at Somewhere in the Suburbs was commenting that her oldest is turning 13, she's got another 13 years until her youngest turns 20, so she's hitting teenagerhood. Here's a quote from her blog ...

Why do I have a feeling that this new phase of our parenting career will be even more challenging than the first stage? So far, I can't find anyone who has raised teenagers who will disagree with me. So, my plan is to hang on and enjoy the ride as much as possible!
I remember a few years back I was talking to one of my friends about this entire parenting gig and she likened it to a roller coaster. (today's picture is brought to you from King's Island, Ohio -- not only because it's likely my favorite coaster in the world -- but also because the name of this coaster is very appropos -- The Beast)

So LSM, and others here's my advice.
  1. Hold on REAL tight
  2. Close your eyes if you can't handle what's coming and
  3. SCREAM real loud when you need to.

Maybe I'll be writing the next parenting manual????

You ever notice how there's tons of books out there on how to parent infants and young children, and so many fewer for teens. Is that because

  1. When you have teens you don't have time to read books.
  2. When you have teens you don't have time to write books.
  3. Ain't nobody figured it out yet.

I guess things will never change

THIS is what I do when I don't go into the shop for an entire day. I waste my time on the blogs.

I don't "follow" politics as much as some of my friends do. I have 1/2 an idea what's going on, and when election time closes in I try to dig around and make as informed a decision as possible (somewhat easier/harder with the Internet -- there's more information but sometimes it's harder to dig between truth and crap). Today I was reading about the possibility of Rudy Giuliani as a possible GOP candidate for 2008. This about sums it up ...

Already, Giuliani’s popularity has set off a “stop Rudy” movement among cultural conservatives, who object to his three marriages and his support for abortion rights, gay unions, and curbs on gun ownership. Some social conservatives even dismiss his achievement in reviving New York before 9/11. An August story on the website Right Wing News, for instance, claims that Giuliani governed Gotham from “left of center.” Similarly, conservatives have been feeding the press a misleading collection of quotations by and about Giuliani, on tax policy and school choice issues, assembled to make him look like a liberal.

I'm not saying I'm for or against Rudy (or Barack or Hillary or Danny or Donnie or Joey or Jonathan or Jordan). I don't know yet - way too early to call.

But I do think that generally speaking most people in this country are in the "middle" of the road. I'd think that *MOST* Democrats AND Republicans are moderate, and we have far more in common than not. I have to wonder if the parties (both the Dems and the GOP) are going to push out the candidates that are in the middle (the more liberal Republicans or the more conservative Democrats) in order to try to put forth a candidate that will toe the party line.

And really -- I'd think we'd all be better off with someone that doesn't toe a party line, but looks at the country as a whole.

Okay -- there's 300,000,000 people in this country -- and while you can't please all the people all time - there really ain't no reason to only think about 150,000,000 of them.

But what do I know -- I'm only one lone voice in the 3 million.

Change in attitude -- without a change in latitude

I'm (trying) to learn to take care of myself. Sometimes some of my "peeps" (more on some of them later) help to remind me.

This week, Crem was out of town for a few days and I picked him up from the airport. Which, at first glance might have seemed crazy but I put it this way ---

from my point of view .... makes me get out of the store -makes me spend time away from my kids

from Crem's point of view ... there's a 75% chance that I'd be cuter than the taxi driver, and there's a 60% chance that my car smells better than the taxi (actually higher than that cause my kids haven't been in the car lately leaving banana peels or 1/2 eaten yogurt containers).

Where's the downside?

So after picking him up I hadn't eaten, he hadn't eaten but it was too late for "dinner" dinner so we went to get some nosh and such :}. He'd already gotten quite lubed enough both with his boss after the presentation and on the plane, but ......

Anyway - as geography would have it, it was not at all inconvenient to make a stop on the way home ...at Cheeseburger in Paradise. Where they have not too bad food and really really good libations.

I now have a new love in my life, and

Today I'm grateful for ...

Chocolate martinis ... Bailey's, Amaretto, Kahlua, cream, chocolate, vodka.

Where's the downside? I'm just sayin ...

Which, of course brings to mind the words of one of my favorite philosophers ...

With these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of our running and all of our cunning
If we couln't laugh we just would go insane
If we weren't all crazy we would go insane .........
